Description
Diazepam works by enhancing the effects of a neurotransmitter called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. GABA is responsible for inhibiting the activity of neurons, leading to a calming or sedative effect. By increasing GABA activity, diazepam reduces the overactivity of the brain that can lead to anxiety, muscle spasms, or seizures.
- Anxiety Disorders: Diazepam is commonly prescribed for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, and certain phobias. It helps reduce feelings of anxiety and promotes relaxation.
- Muscle Spasms: Diazepam is used to relieve muscle spasms caused by conditions such as cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, and spinal cord injuries.
- Seizure Disorders: It’s also used as an adjunctive treatment for certain types of seizures, such as those associated with epilepsy.
- Alcohol Withdrawal: Diazepam can help manage the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal, such as agitation, tremors, and hallucinations.
